Tylenol May Be a Major Cause of Liver Poisonings
Don't be surprised if that bottle of Tylenol and other drugs containing the pain-killer acetaminophen soon have stronger warnings about potential side effects.

And don't be surprised if the popular over-the-counter drug is suddenly harder to get. (In Britain, so many people use acetaminophen to commit suicide by overdosing that health authories limit how many tablets are sold to consumers at once).

Researchers are finding that many Americans may be poisoning their livers by taking too much Tylenol and acetaminophen-containing drugs.

The biggest worry is overdosing on the drug: taking too much for too long or mixing Tylenol and similar drugs with other common drugs (headache pills, cold/flu medicines, etc, which also contain acetaminophen).

Doctors, in fact, think that acetaminophen may be responsible for more liver damage than other drugs that have been removed from the market. The most recent was Rezulin, a diabetes drug.

A Texas doctor studied 300 patients suffering acute liver failure at 22 hospitals. Of those, 38% of the liver failures were directly linked to patients taking too much Tylenol/acetaminophen. A similar study of liver failure found that 35% of the cases were linked to acetaminophen overuse.

Parents also are urged to monitor how much Children's Tylenol and other acetaminophen-containing products they give to children, especially cough/cold medicines and pain relievers. Children's livers can quickly become compromised by too much of the drug, and several deaths have been linked to it.

The problems are especially severe in people who drink alcohol or who are alcoholics, because alcohol by itself can cause liver damage. (Sources: Associated Press).

FDA Examines Safety of Vioxx, Celebrex
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is taking a second look at the popularly prescribed pain relievers and arthritis drugs, Vioxx and Celebrex.

Since early 2001, research has shown that pateints who take Violexx have four times the risk of heart attacks as patients taking another pain reliefer, naproxen (also known as Naprosyn or Aleve).

In fact, the heart attack risks of taking Vioxx seem to increase over time, although researchers still say the overall risk is "low" (about 4 heart attacks per 1,000 patients, which is "low" if you're not one of the four).

Doctors say they're worried because a lot of Vioxx patients are older people who already have a history of heart problems. Both Vioxx and Celebrex -- among the most popular prescribed drugs today -- were developed to combat pain and arthritis but cause fewer ulcers and stomach distress. Even those, claims, however, are coming under fire from reserachers who say that both drugs can also produce ulcer problems in patients who take them.

The FDA is consider whether to add warnings about potential heart complications to the labels of both drugs. (Sources: New York Times, Journal of the American Medical Association).
